Remembering Erk Russell, Who Passed Away Nine Years Ago Today

This video is the most Erk thing ever. And I don’t say that lightly.

Here you have the 1980 National Championship Team celebrating a hard-fought victory over #14 South Carolina. Erk’s defense yielded only 10 points to the Gamecocks (at the time the Gamecocks were averaging more than 34 points per contest)  and forced a fumble by George Rogers (who beat Herschel for the Heisman that year) in the fourth quarter. Erk is casually standing in the back of the room unassuming as can be…except for the cigar in his mouth. He recognizes the award with one hell of a speech:

Men, I appreciate this with all my heart. You don’t know how much I do appreciate it. I love every one of you. And screw Florida and the mule it came in here on.

Georgia beat Florida 26-21 the next week and finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record.
