Bob Diaco, Rivalry Creator, Is Officially A Crazy Person
In the slow cycle for college football news, one is always thankful for the ‘silly season’, where just enough happens in the sport to give fans a little taste of the upcoming season (86 days, y’all!)
Bob Diaco, UConn head football coach, has taken the silly season to a severe and bizarre extreme.

Seen here is a rivalry trophy, commissioned by Diaco, a rivalry name (also commissioned by Diaco), and…wait, UCF doesn’t know about or acknowledge it.
To hear Diaco tell it, it’s not up to the other school to determine who their rivals are. Translation: Central Florida is UConn’s new primary rival, but the Knights don’t recognize the Huskies as such. At all.
As he explained himself to the Hartford Courant yesterday, he made himself sound even more delusional and goofy.
I think it’s definitely going to add a layer of energy and excitement to our contest on [Oct. 10]. I don’t think there’s any way you can argue that even if it’s just a small, little amount. Whether the trophy is honored, it’s honored by us, so you don’t have control over that, so who cares? They don’t get to say whether they’re our rival or not. We might not be their rival, but they don’t get to say whether they’re our rival. That’s for us to decide, so for us it’s plain and clear, because those are things we have control over.
“I think it’s fun. If you embrace it, you embrace it. If you don’t, you don’t. There was nothing before, so if you don’t embrace it, there would still be nothing, and if you do even a little bit, it’s more energetic and exciting. And to me that’s what college football is. College football is intercollegiate and rivalries and challenges and fun storylines.”
Alright then, coach.
The funniest part of this that is not mentioned anywhere: not only was the UCF game Connecticut’s lone FBS win last year (the Huskies finished 2-10 in Diaco’s first season), the trophy doesn’t acknowledge UCF’s 62-17 Blake Bortles-infused win in 2013, the ONLY OTHER MEETING between these schools.
Only 122 more days to go until the next (first?) Civil Conflict.
Thanks for giving me something to riff about, Coach. #GoHuskies, #GoAAC.
