DJ Shockley & Blake Sims: Are They The Same?
DJ Shockley and Blake Sims. These two have a lot more in common than you would think, and I believe that it is a compliment for both of these two to be mentioned in the same sentence. Both of these guys waited their turns behind multiple year starters who lead their teams to many victories, and when it finally came their time people still questioned their ability. As of right now, both QBs went above and beyond expectation and added a complete other dimension for their respective offenses.
I remember growing up thinking David Greene was the greatest player to ever play the game of football. I remember thinking that Shockley would be a turnover machine in 2005, but he ended up putting some impressive stats together. During Shockley’s one year as starter the Dawgs went 10-3, and one of those losses you can accredit to Joe T3’s loss total because Shockley was injured during the Florida game.
- 10-2 Record as a starter
- 2588 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, 5 interceptions
- 322 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns
- 2005 SEC Champions
- Lost on a fake punt to WVU in the Sugar Bowl after a furious 35 unanswered point comeback
AJ McCarron is the most decorated QB in Alabama football history. Back to back National Titles, Maxwell award winner, and 2nd in the Heisman voting. That is a tough act to follow for any QB. Sims was not the projected starter coming into the year due to hype of the FSU transfer Jake Coker. Sims has started all 4 games so far this season and has put up some impressive stats, and lead this team as a captain since day 1. He has earned a lot of respect from me over this time, and I look forward to seeing how this year plays out.
- 1077 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, 2 interceptions
- 190.8 passer rating: leads the SEC
- 132 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns
- 89.4 Total QBR: 5th in the Nation
Long Way To Go
Both Sims and Shockley were patient and have been able to answer the call for their teams. Granted Sims still has a long season ahead of him, but he has shown not only Tide fans, but SEC fans that Alabama’s offense is one to be reckoned with. These guys have knack for bringing fans to their feet, and if you have a chance to watch Sims on Saturday, I promise you wont be disappointed. The good news for Sims is he is more like DJ Shockley and not like Joe T3 and Hutson Mason (so far).
