Lines of Cocaine…or Defense – Whichever You Prefer

Bulldog nation seems down to me.  I don’t know if folks are still hungover from the SEC Championship Game (I’ll buy that excuse) or if they’re just in post-football funks.  But y’all don’t seem too jazzed about this recruiting class (and they probably should be).

If you’re one of those Bulldog loyalists that needs a bump and some energy, you just might get it on the Defensive Line portion of the 2013 recruiting class.

Who’s in?

Big John Atkins (6’4″, 310 lbs.) looks to fill the “Big John” / Defensive Tackle position left voided by John Jenkins’ departure.  Grantham roped Atkins in back in August.  Also competing with Atkins (who spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy) is Chris Mayes (6’4″, 315 lbs.) from Gulf Coast Community College.  He’s considered the nation’s 25th best JUCO recruit.

Who’s Coming?

Based on commitments (which are far from final) Grantham has a few more linemen coming to Athens, GA.  A third defensive tackle, Deandre Johnson, is considered the nation’s 28th best prospect at the position and comes in measuring 6’3″, 310 lbs.  That’s a big ole high schooler.  And one of Atkins’ Hargrave teammates, Leonard Floyd, a four-star DE is also expected to sign.  If he can bulk up a bit – and his frame seems sustainable – the 6’4″ Floyd could be a real force coming off the edge.

Who does Georgia need?

This is where fans might get the “rush” they’re looking for.  But Georgia needs a cocaine-like finish.  Here are some of the names that could give Georgia’s recruiting class (and Georgia fans) a spike:

  • Montravious Adams: The most “household” of these names, Adams is a five-star DT (3rd in the nation) and measures 6’3″, 290 lbs.  The leaders to get Adams are the “big 5” schools (Alabama, Auburn, Clemson,Florida, Georgia).  By all accounts Adams mother liked the folks at Georgia.
  • Dee Liner: is a D Liner that fewer folks are talking about, but this DT ranks just one spot behind Adams in the national rankings.  He is spending this weekend in Athens (after decommitting from Auburn and calling Mark Richt to test the Dawg’s interest) and going with Shaw Wiggins (who has been helping UGA recruit) and staying with Tray Matthews – one of his friends.  This could be huge.
  • Davin Bellamy: Bellamy is a 6’5″, 240 lb. defensive end/beast.  He’s believed to be down to Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia.  The pro to Tennessee: immediate playing time.  FSU: Top tier, ACC team, strong tradition.  Let’s hope he comes around.

That’s all I got/

  1. Other blogs say Liner did not come because Saban threatened to pull his scholarship offer to UA

  2. It’s like some people judge a class by who you get on signing day. The Dawgs have a pretty good group already enrolled and more to come on Wednesday. We may not get Kamara, Tunsil, or some of the others, but I like the class we have so far.
