One Month Later…Aaron Murray
Heading into the season, I satirically defended the SEC coaches and their decision to vote Aaron Murray 1st Team Preseason All-SEC quarterback ahead of both a reigning Heisman winner, and the quarterback of the reigning national champions. One of the big reasons I mentioned was that when all was said and done, Murray would most likely hold or challenge all the SEC records. One month later? That ‘likely’ has been upgraded to metaphysical certitude.
Single Season Passing Yards
The SEC record is held by Kentucky’s (!) Tim Couch (!!) at 4,275 yards. Right now, Aaron has 1,338 yards through four games, for an average of 334.5 a game. Taken over 14 games (12 regular season + SEC Championship + Bowl Game) would have Murray finish up at 4,683 yards, blowing away the current record. And don’t be surprised to see the yards per game tick up in the coming weeks, as Gurley may be hurt and more of the load could be placed on the quarterback’s more than able shoulders.
Career Touchdown Passes
He’s already smoked David Greene’s UGA record of 77 passes, and recently took the career lead over Peyton Manning who tossed
100 89 over his years in Knoxville, so Murray has his eyes set on Danny Wuerffel’s record of 114 touchdown passes. Four games in, Aaron is standing with 106, so his passing of the former Gator is not a matter of if, but when at this point.
Career Passing Yards
I’m not gonna dig too deep here, just know that Aaron Murray is 99 yards away from tying David Greene’s SEC record. So, yeah. That’s gonna fall. Maybe before the half against Tennessee.
Chris Leak (!!!) holds the SEC record at 895 completions, while through game 4, Murray has 775 completions. Another SEC record under his belt.
Basically, barring injury, look for the SEC record book to be rewritten with a whole lot of red and black by the end of the season, and will have him deep in the conversation as the most accomplished passer in UGA history, joining Frank Sinkwich, Fran Tarkenton, Eric Zier, David Greene and Matthew Stafford. That’s some real good company.
