Chris Wilson was the Right Hire as DL Coach: Here’s Everything You Need to Know
I’ve seen a lot of grumbling today regarding the reported hiring of Chris Wilson. Many were sure that Grantham would bring in an NFL guy. Others were looking for a bigger name. There are three things to remember here:
1. Chris Wilson was the Defensive Coordinator at Mississippi State until the Bowl game when the title was dropped and assigned to another coach. Why that happened, we can’t be entirely sure, but the fact remains that for 12 games he coordinated the nation’s 34th best scoring defense. He’s a respectable coach who has coached at a higher position than the one he is taking.
2. All reports indicate that Chris Wilson was “hired away” from Mississippi State, which indicates that regardless of their confusing co-coordinator system and flopping of titles, he was still a Cowbell ringer, and MSU expected him to be around. In essence: Georgia took him. Georgia couldn’t “take” a defensive coach from anyone a few seasons ago.
3. Todd Grantham was said to be instrumental in the entire searching and hiring process. I for one trust that if he signed of on Chris Wilson he is fired up about Chris Wilson. I don’t think Grantham would “settle” on personnel decisions.
With those things in mind, I’m just fine with the hire.
Here is Wilson’s resume, notice the Special Teams experience:
2011- Mississippi State (Defensive Coordinator/ Defensive Line)
2010: Mississippi State (Co-Defensive Coordinator/ Defensive Line)
2007-09: Oklahoma (Special Teams Coordinator / Defensive Ends)
2005-06: Oklahoma (Defensive Ends)
2000-04: Colorado (Defensive Line)
2000 (Spr.): Army (Defensive Line)
1998-99: Illinois State (Defensive Line)
1997: Indiana State (Linebackers / Recruiting Coordinator)
1996: Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line)
1995: Northern Illinois (Linebackers)
1994: Indiana State (Linebackers)
1993: Indiana State (Graduate Assistant)
Again, an SEC Defensive Coordinator who coached the 34th best scoring defense in the country is now Georgia’s defensive line coach. That’s a pretty good get.
That’s all I got/

Good to hear the voice of reason.
Now that’s probably giving me too much credit!! Ha, thanks for reading.
It’s interesting to me that he has also served as a Special Teams coordinator in the past. Any word on if he’ll be helping out in this area as well?
That hasn’t been said yet, but the Dawgs could use all hands on deck in that area and currently those duties are divvied up between the coaches. I’m betting he’ll have some responsibilities there.
Please, you must at least a second cousin, if you refer to this as a voice of reason. Now, a voice of ignorance……………….crying to be recognized, maybe!!!!
Don’t forget your verbs, Jerry! They give your sentence action!
